This design/build project involves adding three new railway tracks through the existing building at the ground floor level, and a new extension to the building. The existing building has a footprint of approximately 108,000 SF of basement, ground, and partial mezzanine levels. The structural study and preliminary design consisted of analyzing and strengthening the existing ground and mezzanine levels to allow for the addition of new tracks, and the partial demolition and removal of some columns. The work involved relocation of the basement level loading dock, construction of a new loading dock extension, modification of the existing floor framing of the mezzanine level to provide a 11’-2” vertical clearance for rail cars to pass underneath the mezzanine, and modification of the north and south exterior masonry walls to allow for installation of new entrance garage doors for the new rail tracks.
