I-95 Urban Deck Retaining Walls
Client: VDOT
Location: Alexandria, VA
These ALA-designed retaining walls are four similar but separate concrete structures totaling over 1,900-ft in length that carry a pedestrian trail and sound barrier (of maximum height 30-ft), while also serving as a retaining structure between the interstate highway and adjacent properties on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge west approaches. The structures consist of a 12-ft wide reinforced concrete slab supported by parallel reinforced concrete walls on a single concrete footing. Design of the foundation included a wide variety of foundation types in order to accommodate differing soil conditions and to reduce vibrational impacts to adjacent property, such as a historical cemetery and church, and apartments with pre-existing structural concerns. The foundation types included spread footings, 18” and 24” prestressed concrete piles, drilled shafts and drilled mini-piles.
