ALA had a major role in the design of this replacement bridge - a 35-span, 6,075-ft long dual gateway structure providing a vital link in the interstate system between Virginia and Maryland spanning the Potomac River. ALA provided structural design and construction document preparation services for the Maryland and Virginia abutments and wingwalls (50-ft high by 9-ft thick structures supported on 36” and 30” diameter steel pipe piles); a six-story reinforced concrete Operator’s Tower on a 30-degree tilt including a three-dimensional stainless steel screenwall; a multi-utility support system beneath the bridge; finished deck geometry and elevations; a transparent (Paraglas) noise wall supported on the bridge deck; and a special design bridge drainage system.
