FALL HILL

ALA designed and prepared construction documents for this single span bridge replacement. The bridge is located in an environmentally and historically sensitive area with multiple overhead power lines and underground utilities in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. The bridge replacement accommodates two lanes of traffic and two 5’-6” sidewalks with safety railings.  The bridge includes full integral abutments with the west stub abutment supported behind an MSE wall and the east abutment protected with riprap. The bridge superstructure consists of prestressed concrete bulb-t beams which offer a low maintenance cost over steel plate girders.  The new bridge accommodates and spans over the existing East stone abutment, a historic gravity stone wall-type abutment. ALA also designed replacements for an adjacent pedestrian bridge and a separate utility bridge. 

The roadway was closed to traffic during construction.  The existing roadway profile was significantly raised to accommodate a proposed hiker/biker trail beneath the bridge adjacent to the canal.  Aesthetic enhancements were provided on the bridge in coordination with the City of Fredericksburg
